Roll Types
Today, journals are designed in three ways.
They are either bolted-on journals, inserted journals or integral journals.
| Bolted |
| Below is an example of bolted-on journals, in which forged steel journals are bolted to the chilled cast-iron body. The body is counter-bored to accept a pintle from the journal. This fit takes the sheer load off the bolts. The bolted design is a far superior design. |
In addition, steel forgings are easier to maintain because they can be easily repaired, welded, or replaced. |
| |
| Inserted |
Inserted rolls have shrunk-fit steel journals, which are utilized for smaller rolls. |
| Integral |
Inserted and integral journals are being replaced by bolted-on journals as rolls are being replaced or journals repaired.
On an integral roll, the journals are machined from a one piece casting. |

| |
| Standard, non-heated rolls have become obsolete for use in new calender designs. They are still supplied as replacements for existing rolls. SHW would be happy to provide a quotation for your standard (non-heated) rolls or make recommendations to upgrade them to more modern standards. |
